Oral Surgical Procedures: Avoiding Acute Complications
and Overcoming Hurdles to Future Treatment

Surgical procedures can be considered as controlled trauma. This course will
examine the effects of common procedures on the oral tissues and the mechanisms
that may lead to acute complications and long-term sequelae. The impact of local
and systemic factors such as medications and disease will be considered as part of
an integrated approach to surgical patient management. Approaches to problems
such as insufficient soft or hard tissue for implant rehabilitation will be examined
       from an evidence-based perspective.

       • Understanding how hard and soft tissues heal
       • Appreciate local and systemic factors that can compromise patient outcomes
       • Evaluate the effectiveness of techniques and procedures used to mitigate
complications and overcome hurdles to oral rehabilitation
